planning a wedding day that doesn't suck

Let’s be real, we’ve all been to that wedding. The one where the guests are melting in the sun for ninety minutes, the couple looks like they’re running a marathon they didn’t train for, and the whole day feels more like a staged production than a celebration.

As photographers, we spend 8 to 12 hours behind the lens at every wedding. We see the moments of pure joy, but we also see where the "wedding machine" starts to grind people down. If you want a day that actually feels like a party (and results in much better photos), here is the no-nonsense guide to planning a wedding that doesn't suck.

1. Kill the "Traditional" Timeline

Most wedding timelines are built around outdated traditions that don’t serve you. If you don't want to spend two hours taking formal family portraits while your friends are enjoying cocktail hour, don't do it.

The Fix: Consider a First Look. Seeing each other before the ceremony allows you to knock out all your portraits early. Once the "I dos" are done, we also recommend holding the family back to snap all those beautiful family photos. The other guests can head off to cocktail hour. This prevents us from having to wrangle the family up afterwards and keeps the family all in one place.

These two changes have made weddings seamlessly transition and make for ample time to get all the necessary photos!

2. The GAP IS YOUR ENEMY

Nothing kills a party mood faster than a three-hour gap between the ceremony and the reception, where guests are left wandering a parking lot or sitting around waiting.

The Fix: Aim for a seamless transition. If your ceremony ends at 4:30 PM, the bar at the reception venue should be open by 5:00 PM. Happy guests make for the best candid photos.

Smooth transitions from one event to the other can keep your guests on the move, so they don't have to ask what's next.

Pro Tip: Make cardstock program fans/flyers using the amazon kit below. Use Canva to print the timeline so guests are aware of what is to come. Who doesn't love a free fan on a hot, sunny day?

3. Feed People (Early and Often)

Hangry guests are grumpy guests.

The Fix: Ensure there is food available immediately following the ceremony. Whether that be a charcuterie board or just some chips, it will be appreciated.

The Late Night Save: If your reception goes until midnight, order some pizzas or sliders for the 10:30 PM slump. It re-energizes the dance floor and prevents the "Irish Exit" from guests who are just looking for a taco bell.

4. Limit the Speeches

We love listening to heartfelt speeches, but sometimes it feels like an eternity. Also, it's stressful figuring out who will speak, how many will speak, and how long the speeches should be.

The Fix: Limit speeches to three people and give them a three-minute cap.

Why? This is just the right number of people and length to keep the guests engaged!

5. hire vendors you actually like

You will spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than you will with your new spouse. If your vendors are stiff, bossy, or "too much," you’ll feel it in your shoulders all day, and it will show in your photos.

The Fix: Choose a team that feels like guests you’d actually invite. When you're relaxed and having fun, the photos happen naturally.

The bottom line

Your wedding is a celebration, not a performance. The best weddings aren't the ones with the most expensive flowers; they’re the ones where the couple is present, the drinks are cold, and the schedule, and you have room to breathe.

Focus on the experience, and the "perfect day" will take care of itself.
